A Parting Quietude was commissioned by the Australian Piano Quartet (APQ) in 1997. In 2018, the work was retitled, shortened, edited, and the original version withdrawn.
As the title may suggest, the work is largely sparse and meditative, with the earlier sections devoted to solos from each of the three string instruments. Sudden rapid phrases break the stillness, and although greater interplay develops as the work progresses, it soon dissipates into the higher registers, as though evaporating, leaving no trace...
