"Piano Sonata" Audio Sample
Entitled “Piano Sonata”, this piece is essentially a revision and distillation of a much longer solo piano work from 1990 - “Hammers” (commissioned by Roger Smalley and winner of the 1991 Jean Bogan Prize for Solo Piano Composition).
The Sonata adheres to the formal and gestural substance of the earlier work, but in a more succinct and refined manner — perhaps a purging of the sins of youth! Hammers is now to be considered a ‘withdrawn’ work.
Piano Sonata has an essentially improvisational flow, with it’s continuous one-movement form traversing numerous contrasting sections. The earlier analytical detail that accompanied the earlier Hammers no longer seems relevant to this new presentation. A major shift in personal perspective (not surprising after 30 years!) seems to have allowed the poetics of the work to rise from the earlier attention to compositional detail and inner workings.
