Penny’s Circus for Bb Clarinet and Piano is a collection of seven lyrical, and light-hearted pieces. Merry-Go-Round, Morning Song and Shevaun and Justin Argue Over a Toy are arrangements of three solo piano pieces from my publication of Pieces for Piano - Volume I. The remaining pieces are original works composed especially for this book.
This set of contrasting works is written particularly for the clarinetist in their first few years of performance. All pieces make use of the clarion register and ‘crossing the break’; as well as many expressive elements, particularly with regard to dynamics, tempo and legato phrasing. The metronome markings need not be strictly adhered to.
The use of 'grad.' in the score refers to gradual.
Penny’s Dance: Level 2/3 - a slow dance in a medieval style.
Scaly Monster: Level 2/3 - a fast paced work depicting, as the title suggests, lots of scales.
Morning Song: Level 2/3 - a lovely lyrical piece presenting a happy start to the day.
Penny’s Song: Level 2/3 - a song without words - lyrical and expressive.
Shevaun and Justin Argue Over a Toy: Level 4/5 - an aggressive and dissonant piece with repeating notes.
Merry-Go-Round: Level 4/5 - quirky and slightly syncopated, it depicts a fascination with the carnival.
Waltz on the Flying Trapeze: Level 3/4 - a light-hearted work, flying high with somersaults and twists.
The piano accompaniment (for practice) is also available for download.
